The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori-based religious formation program for children, beginning at the age of three. It seeks to create and facilitate a sacred, “hands-on” space for children called an Atrium, in which both the children and their catechists can hear, ponder, and celebrate the most essential mysteries of the Catholic faith as revealed in the Scriptures and the Liturgy. Originally developed in Rome by Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi fifty years ago, the Catechesis continues to spread world-wide.
At The Way of the Shepherd Catholic Montessori School, our children ages 3 through 12 look forward to their weekly Atrium time where they spend an hour and a half to two and a half hours working, listening, praying, and enjoying time with each other and with the Good Shepherd.
For the past 7 years we have been inviting families outside of our school community to participate in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) through our Community Atrium program. Our intention when starting this program was to provide opportunities for families to experience the atrium until area churches established their own programs. It has been and will be our continued commitment to meet with parishes and offer our advice and support so that children throughout the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis and beyond will have access to this amazing faith formation program.
Community Atrium Update
We have witnessed the opening of new atriums in our local Catholic schools and parishes and a growing support of CGS in the past 7 years. This growth coupled with the growth of our school and the need for our school atrium space and catechists to serve our school children has led to our decision not to continue offering our Community Atrium sessions beginning in 2018-19.
Though it is difficult to say good bye to our Community Atrium families, we know that children will be able to access the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at our local parishes. Please contact our Community Atrium Coordinator, Mary Minor, at email@example.com or 763-862-9110 to be connected with a local atrium program. You can also visit cgsusa.org to find an atrium near you!
If you would like to advocate bringing CGS to your parish, we encourage you to contact Carolyn Kohlhaas (firstname.lastname@example.org or 763-862-9110), our Lead Catechist, who can give you guidance about how you might be able to begin and focus your efforts. Please pray for our community as we navigate the new challenges we face and know that we will ever be committed to helping the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd become more and more available to our local families!
