Many school communities that choose a multiage structure for their classrooms due to low enrollments are discovering the educational benefits to children that Montessori educators have known for over a hundred years. Children thrive in environments with a variety of ages. The younger students have role models to look up to, and the older students have an opportunity to demonstrate their leadership skills. All students have an opportunity to move through many levels of work – at their own pace. Preparing and maintaining such a classroom can be very challenging! Way of the Shepherd invites traditional educators who are contemplating taking on this challenge to “come and see” how beautifully multiage classrooms can work.
